Profile of the ideal Greater Toronto Chapter Board Director
- Has leadership experience in the field of green buildings within their particular field/discipline/industry.
- Has the ability to be a leader and an advocate.
- Is self-motivated, has passion for sustainable building practices.
- Is capable of a taking a lead role on committees with other members when required.
Commitment and Workload
- Will commit to serve for one (1) term of two (2) years.
- Will commit to attending all Board meetings. The Board meets monthly unless otherwise determined by the Directors, with an average duration of 2 hours. Advanced preparation time is required to read the board meeting agenda and any supplementary documents.
- Executive Committee (Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary) have an additional monthly meeting that requires a minimum of two (2) hours per month.
- Directors are also expected to serve on committees and possibly act as Committee Chair. Committees report to the Board and provide much needed expertise to advance the Chapter’s goals, objectives and programs. Time commitments vary based on the individual committees’ goals and objectives. Staff supports the work of the committees. Reasonable time commitment expectation is one meeting monthly or bi-monthly plus preparation time, depending on tasks of committee.
- Attendance at Chapter Meetings (evenings), approximately 8 – 10 per year
- Attendance at Annual General Meeting
Responsibilities of the Greater Toronto Chapter Board (from GTC-CaGBC By-laws)
- Participates in the development of Chapter goals.
- Sets Chapter policy and serves as a forum for public debate on key issues that affect the industry.
- Allocates resources, i.e., approving the budget.
- Identifies and recruits members for the Greater Toronto Chapter.
- Hires, evaluates, and supports staff, as appropriate.
- Assures that the appropriate provincial and federal forms are filed annually.
- Maintains adequate structure and governance to carry out the Chapter’s goals.
- Promotes membership in the CaGBC.
Additional Responsibilities
In addition to the responsibilities set out in the By-laws, the following fall within a Director’s purview:
- Represent the GTC at Chapter Meetings, events and within professional networks.
- Oversees the Chapter’s strategic direction; approving organizational goals, objectives, targets and priorities as part of the annual strategic planning process.
- Identifies and supports the development of collaborative efforts with other organizations and potential sponsors.
- Approves governance structure and the formation or dissolution of committees.
- Ensures the Chapter is complying with the By-laws and approved budget – fiduciary responsibility
Remuneration
The Directors shall receive no remuneration, but may be reimbursed for pre-approved expenses necessarily and reasonably incurred by the Director while engaged in the affairs of the Chapter. No Director shall receive any profit or financial benefit directly or indirectly from his or her position as such.
